GIL & TUEY
"The international trio of Gil Gutierrez (guitar), Pedro Cartas (violin) and Tuey Connell (banjo) have named flamenco, Cuban son, bossa nova and tango along with bluegrass to describe the music they play, but the best way to describe something like their lilting, deeply evocative "Irene y Diego" would be magic. Their blend of styles is both seamless and loaded with melodic ideas that linger in the ear.
- Flamenco, tango, gypsy jazz, bluegrass, cuban son, Mexican folk, American Songbook, classical, bossa nova, jazz and original composition.
Mexican nylon string guitarist Gil Gutierrez, Cuban violinist Pedro Cartas, and American banjo player/singer Tuey Connell have recorded a new record of original music in May of 2005 down in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Their debut CD 'The Lonely Hippo,' is just out.
Their performances at the Kennedy Center, Mexican Cultural Center, on the East Coast and California have all been met with standing ovations - this is truly an exciting new world music group.
Gil Gutierrez - (Mexico) nylon string guitar, tres
Pedro Cartas - (Cuba) violin
Tuey Connell - (USA) banjo, guitar, vocals, harmonica
Stephan Schatz - (USA) cajon, udu, tablas, percussion
Chicago Tribune Selects 'The Lonely Hippo' as One of Ten Best Bluegrass Albums of 2006:

BIO:
Tuey has performed and/or recorded with Taj Mahal, Arturo Sandoval, Vassar Clements, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Livingston Taylor, Don Stiernberg, Robbie Fulks, Slavek Hanzlik and other equally talented musicians and entertainers.
Tuey's earthy soulful voice in combination with his guitar, banjo, lap steel and harmonica playing, make him a unique force in any style of music. As NYC recording engineer, David Baker said of his singing and songwriting: "You've got your own groovy little genre," and his chosen genre is decidedly American in origin. Tuey's songwriting, arrangements of jazz Standards, blues, folk, roots rock, pop and gospel songs all come from what Tuey calls his 'roots music.'
Tuey Connell grew up on his family's working vineyard, Crosswoods Vineyard, in North Stonington, Connecticut. After a full day of work in the fields, Tuey would practice the banjo for hours, often driving his parents and two brothers crazy. His mother played piano, guitar and sang and his family always listened to music - the Kingston Trio, Nat King Cole, Bob Marley, Billie Holiday, Bach, Mozart, Bill Evans, Wes Montgomery, Traffic, the Allman Brothers, Flatt and Scruggs, BB King.
In 1986 Tuey moved to Chicago and began performing professionally throughout the US and Europe. Through the help of a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, which had awarded Tuey an Artist Fellowship Grant for his contemporary banjo compositions, he recorded a CD and soon heard himself on the radio. Word spread and he began fielding requests to perform on other CDs, at festivals and for radio and TV jingles - for the likes of Blue Cross Blue Shield and Gravy Train.
Tuey began to experience more attention for his singing and songwriting when acclaimed recording engineer, David Baker (Shirley Horn, Medeski/Martin/Wood, Maceo Parker), co-produced his second CD, Tuey Connell - Is This Love. Unbeknownst to Connell, Baker took it upon himself to send Connell's music out to industry connections and soon Connell had a deal with Minor Music of Germany (www.minormusic.de). Tuey Connell - Songs for Joy and Sadness was his 2nd for Minor Music and received terrific press in Europe as well.
Tuey Connell - Under the Influence is his latest recording and has major US and European distribution. With rave reviews, Tuey's new CD is currently being played on more than 120 radio stations accross the country and Tuey and his trio are touring extensively to support it.
